One of the jobs that is doing particularly well is being a tyre fitter. While it may sound quite exhausting, these job does have its advantages which makes it quite the catch. If you’re interested in becoming a tyre fitter here is what is required and how you can go about it.

Who is a tyre fitter? 

Before you can jump into the details, it is better to understand what will be expected of you. As a tyre fitter, you will be expected to work as part of a team where you will specialize primarily on tyres. There is no limit to the size of cars that you can work on since you will be trained to handle all situations from small light weight cars to the public service vehicles.

While most of the work is manual, you will at times use measuring equipments and if you’re working for a larger company, your training may be extended to cover repairing suspension systems, breaks and steering and you may also learn how to fit child safety seats. However, for now we will stick to tyre fitting. 

Your work environment

As a tyre fitting expert, expect that you will work long hours as some of the tyre fitting centres that you will work for are open for long hours and there is a high chance that there could be overtime as well. The better part is that your working hours are on a rota. 

Your skills could be applicable in a variety of areas that include garages, workshop and in some awkward instances you may have to get the job done out in the open. While in your line of work, some of the tools that you will most likely use include the ramps and pits, workbenches and a variety of power tools.

 

The Requirements 

While the profession may sound quite basic, there are a number of requirements that one should be able to meet so as to qualify for the job. 

First and foremost, this is a highly manual job and being physically fit is a key attribute. The work in this particular field can be heavy and strenuous and having the muscle to do it is a great requirement. 

In most cases, you will be dealing with the customers directly. As such you need to have proper communication and customer service skills so as to maintain good business and also keep the customers happy.

It is also a great requirement for you to have basic numerical skills as well as some accounting since you will be expected to handle cash in some instances as well as credit card transactions. For your own good, it would also be ideal if you were to be conscious of the safety and health regulations as it might also be needed by the employer to be able to guarantee your safety. 

Training

There is a great number of training courses that are available for those that want to be experts in tyre fitting. The courses differ in the time taken, the cost and the certification but it would be a better idea to start from the ground and work your way up.

The best thing is that some of the courses are free but only offer certification while some of the advanced courses which are more costly and tailor made to meet the industry standard are an ideal tool for those that are looking to advance in this field. 

Career Opportunities

While most people might tend to think that with such a profession one is likely to be stuck changing tyres, they couldn’t be more mistaken. Just like any other profession, one can be able to advance as their experience and education increases.

In this particular field, one can also work for transport companies to carry out inspections regularly and maintain the workshop, you can also be promoted to manager or supervisor depending on your work ethic and reliability. Honestly put, the opportunities in this field are limitless. As such it may be a good profession for one to consider instead of having to compete with the bottle neck effect that has been put up by the corporate world.
